Dolomites – photography trip 2024 – Part 2
The following morning, we set out for sunrise at Sass de Putia, located on the edge of the Puez-Odle National Park, between the Val Badia and Val di Funes valleys.
On the way to our next location, we stopped several times to take pictures. The small houses looked incredibly charming in this picturesque setting.
We wanted to visit the Santa Maddalena Church in the Val di Funes valley. However, the hike up from the valley was too steep and long, so we found an alternative spot along a narrow mountain road and I launched the drone to capture it from a good angle. The light could have been better, but it was still better than nothing. The jagged peaks of the Odle group formed a dramatic backdrop.
For sunset, we headed to the Gardena Pass. We parked and then hiked to our chosen spot. I set up my camera for a timelapse but kept adjusting my position to find the ideal composition. Eventually, I found the perfect spot, set the camera, and waited for the right moment to start the timelapse. Meanwhile, as the sun set, I used my drone to capture the last lights. I photographed Sassolungo, the Sella group, the Odle group, the Cir group, and Selva di Val Gardena.
By the time we finished shooting the starry sky, the air had turned quite cold, and I was exhausted from the long day. Back at the accommodation, we charged all our batteries and got some much-needed rest. The next morning, we didn’t wake up as early since our destination, Lake Braies, is surrounded by high mountains, so the sun comes up later from behind them.
I vividly remembered this lake from the previous year due to its crystal-clear turquoise water. This time, I walked around it. The paths are well-maintained where necessary, with only a few steep sections, but overall, it’s an easy walk. The mix of larches and evergreens created a striking contrast here as well.
For sunset, we headed to the Giau Pass. About 200 meters from the main road, we found the small Ra Gusela Lake, a tiny pond about 10 meters in diameter. We quickly photographed the reflection of the Ra Gusela peak, then drove up to the parking lot and hiked to a higher vantage point with panoramic views.
We arrived just in time; the sun was already low.
Nestled between Ra Gusela and the Tofana group, the Cinque Torri appeared small.
As the sun disappeared behind the mountains, it painted the sky in beautiful colors.
We made the most of these two days as well. In the final part, I will cover the last two days of the trip.
