Slovenia – photography trip 2023

In February 2023, we went on a multi-day photography trip to Slovenia. Our first destination was the Church of Sveti Tomaž, just like on our previous Slovenian trip. We departed at night and planned our journey to arrive before sunrise. A bit more fog would have made the scene even more spectacular, but it was still a great start.

After that, we headed to the Peričnik Waterfall. A short hike leads up to the waterfall. There is a railing along the trail, which was absolutely necessary as everything was frozen, making the climb quite challenging. A significant amount of ice had accumulated around the waterfall.

The next morning, we started our day at sunrise by Lake Bled.

From there, we went to Lake Zelenci. The area around Zelenci is a protected nature reserve, home to unique flora and fauna, including rare peat moss and protected bird species. A wooden observation tower stands by the lake, offering a breathtaking view of the emerald-green water and the towering peak of Jalovec in the background. The location is easily accessible, as it is near the main road, and after a short walk, you can reach the crystal-clear lake. The Mangart mountain is beautifully reflected in the water.

Our next destination was the partially frozen Lago di Fusine, not far from the Italian-Slovenian border.

In the afternoon, our final stop was Slap Virje, a waterfall about 12 meters high. For me, this was the most spectacular location of the day.

The following day, we arrived before sunrise at our planned destination, the Church of Jamnik. This church is located on a hill near Triglav National Park, with the silhouette of Mount Storžič in the background.

We then continued into Triglav National Park, where we admired the Savica Waterfall.

Since there was no fog at Jamnik when we visited, we tried again the next morning, hoping for better conditions. It didn’t work out, but the scenery was still beautiful.

After sunrise, we continued our hike in the Pokljuka Gorge. One of its unique features is the Luknja Cave, which has an opening at the top, allowing light to filter in and create a mystical atmosphere. Huge icicles hung from the rock walls.

Although nature wasn’t always on our side in terms of conditions, I still think the trip was a success. We had the chance to discover some truly stunning places.
