Slovenia – photography trip 2024 – Part 4

Our last day began before sunrise at Lake Bled. The morning was misty and rainy, creating a mystical atmosphere around the lake and the church on the island.

We waited for sunrise, though the sun itself remained hidden behind thick clouds.

Before heading to our next location, I wanted to capture a photo of Bled Castle, which stands dramatically on a cliff above the lake. Blejski grad is the oldest castle in Slovenia, and I envisioned a composition where both the castle and the island church would be visible together. Thanks to the drone’s three different focal length lenses, I believed this was achievable. I found a promising point, and once we got there, the drone helped me locate the perfect angle. The drifting mist added to the mood, and I managed to capture the shot I had envisioned.

Since the rain kept starting and stopping, we hesitated slightly but decided to proceed with the day’s planned hike. Our destination was Mostnica Gorge, a breathtaking canyon in Triglav National Park, not far from Lake Bohinj. The gorge was carved by the Mostnica stream, which originates from glaciers in the Julian Alps. A few hundred meters from the parking area, we reached our first stop, where cameras immediately came out. Here we found steep rock walls and pools of water.

We soon split up, each of us searching for interesting compositions. A small stream trickled down the stones along the path.

After a few hundred meters, I reached an open area where the stream cascaded over a large rock formation, creating several small waterfalls side by side.

For me, the final stop was a rock formation known as the Elephant Rock, named for its resemblance to an elephant. From the side, its shape was somewhat visible. I could have continued further into the gorge, but on the one hand it was getting dark, I also noticed the thick fog above the canyon, making for an irresistible aerial opportunity.

So, I packed up my gear and walked back to the parking area. While waiting for the others, I captured some final drone shots of the misty landscape.

To close the day – and as it turned out, our Slovenian adventure – I took one last panorama of Lake Bohinj.

Eventually, the rest of the group returned. We found a nearby restaurant and enjoyed a final dinner together. The next morning, the weather forecast proved correct – heavy rain fell nonstop. We had originally planned to stay for one more day, but with conditions like this, we saw little reason to remain. Even so, I felt the trip was a great success. We explored incredible places, witnessed breathtaking landscapes, and the drone opened up entirely new dimensions of photography for me. Given the weather, we packed up and began the journey home. After a week of rest and work, we were ready to embark on a new adventure. I will bring you the story of the next trip soon.
