Slovenia – photography trip 2024 - Part 1
The beauty of the landscape captivated me during our previous two trips, so we set off hiking to Slovenia once again. By now, it has become a tradition for us to visit the Church of St. Tomaž at sunrise, and this time was no different. In the meantime, I had purchased a drone, which opened up entirely new possibilities. This church is typically photographed from the same angle – at least, that’s how I had seen it before. When we arrived at the usual spot, several photographers were already lined up in small and large groups.
We were lucky to witness the most spectacular misty morning so far at this location, and thanks to the drone, I was able to capture it from every direction. Since the Mavic 3 Pro has multiple cameras with different focal lengths, I had the chance to experiment with backgrounds, distances, and perspectives.
While I was photographing the area with the drone, I also captured some timelapse footage with my camera. Here are a few shots from the series.
Once the daylight fully set in and we were done, we continued our journey to a wooded area between Bled and Mount Triglav. After the overnight drive, exhaustion finally caught up with me. At our first stop, I still wandered around the forest, searching for subjects to photograph. But at the second location, I decided to stay in the car and take a nap while the others took photos. I actually managed to sleep for a bit, only to wake up to a large hiking group – consisting of both adults and children – passing by rather noisily next to the car. By then, I had rested a little, so I got out, stretched, and had something to eat. Since the others hadn’t returned yet and I had no idea where they were or how far they had gone, I decided to scout the area with my drone. The foggy, cloudy weather persisted.
Eventually, the others reappeared and showed me the spot where they had found fly agaric mushrooms. While I took some pictures, they had their lunch, and then we moved on.
As sunset approached, we headed to a mountainside where we had planned to watch the C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) comet after dark. The sunset was beautiful, but we soon realized that our plans for comet photography had quite literally been clouded over.
Despite this, I wasn’t disappointed in the slightest. I used the drone to explore the autumn-colored forests of the Martuljek mountain range nearby.
Since we were in the area, I also took a closer look at the lower Martuljek waterfall. Its waters flow into the Sava River just over a kilometer downstream.
To wrap up the day, I created a Tiny Planet panorama.
With the overnight drive included, our first day turned out to be incredibly long, but I feel like we made the most of it. To be continued in the next part.
